Dr. Argyro Zenetos is currently a Research Director at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR).
Born in Athens in 1953, she received her BSc in Natural Sciences from the University of Athens in 1975, her M.Sc. in Computational Paleoecology from St. Andrews, Scotland in 1980 and her Ph.D. in Marine Biology from the University of Athens in 1986. Employed at the HCMR (former NCMR) since 1984, she has been serving as a researcher since 1989.
She is married with two children.
Initially working at the Institute of Oceanography/ HCMR (1984-2005: head of zoobenthos Laboratory), she has a 21 year experience in the systematics and biodiversity of benthic macrofauna. Since 2005 she works at the Institute of Marine Biological Resources/ HCMR. Argyro Zenetos has collaborated in more than 55 research projects run in the Institute, and co-ordinated 11 of them. Her research interests include taxonomy of mollusca; benthic ecology of marine coastal ecosystems; biodiversity in the Mediterranean and Black Seas; database development; development of biological indicators (fact sheets on biological indicators for the WFD) and author of an innovative benthic indicator (BENTIX).
She has been working on marine alien species since 1997 and has been responsible for the development of indicators on Marine Invasive species at EEA (European Environment Agency) 2002- to date. Argyro Zenetos is a member of SEBI2010 working group since 2005. As a National expert for Greece she is participating in the annual ICES/IOC/IMO WGBOSV meetings. She has organized, co-ordinating and Managing the ELNAIS Network (Ellenic Network on Aquatic Invasive Species).
Zenetos’ teaching experience includes lectures at the Interdepartmental MSc in “Oceanography” of the School of Science of the University of Athens; Teaching in the programme ‘PAIDEIA-Study abroad programs in Greece’, HCMR (Hydrobiological Station of Rhodes)-University of Rhode Island and Lectures in summer schools. She has acted as Member of the supervising committee of 5 PhD theses (1 in the University of Malaga, 1 in University of Thessaloniki and 3 in the University of Athens).
Argyro Zenetos has published widely including one of the CIESM volumes on alien mollusca in the Mediterranean. She is the author of 85 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals (50 in ISI journals), and 3 books. She has presented her work in numerous national and international conferences. Her work has been cited in 1561 articles.
Argyro Zenetos is Chief Editor in the journal Mediterranean Marine Science; the main editor in International Reports for UNEP/MAP, RAC/SPA and EEA. She is in the editorial board of the international journal “Aquatic invasions” and Editor of National and International State of Environment Reports .
