Dr. Ioanna Varkitzi is a postdoctoral scientist at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR). She is a marine biologist.

Her scientific interests are currently concerned with the impact of global change on harmful microalgae and the interaction of phytoplankton with other planktonic organisms under future ocean conditions, e.g. ocean acidification and global warming. She is involved in the FP7 EU project Mediterranean Sea Acidification in a changing climate (MedSeA).
She is an expert in ecology, physiology and taxonomy of harmful microalgae and other marine phytoplankton groups. Her work involves laboratory and field experiments, light and fluorescence microscopy combined with Image Analysis software, automated cell counting, microalgal pigment analysis, radioactive isotope methods, microalgae isolation from natural populations, establishment of monospecific laboratory cultures, supervision of stock cultures’ maintenance, large scale culturing systems for mass production of bioactive compounds by microalgae, datasets construction and advanced statistical analysis.

She completed her PhD in Athens University, Greece. Her Doctoral Thesis focused on the ecology and dynamics of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs), their relation with nutrient pollution, and the interactions of harmful dinoflagellates and diatoms with benthic bivalves. She also holds a Master’s degree in Oceanography and Marine Biology.

Dr. Varkitzi has participated as a research associate in EU research projects, such as SESAME IP, EUROCEANS, FATE, BEMMFISH, national and EU co-funded projects, such as Enter and Pythagoras, national coastal monitoring projects etc.

She is an invited Reviewer in peer reviewed Journals, such as Harmful Algae, Cahiers de Biologie Marine etc
