Dr Catherine Tsangaris is Associate Researcher at the Institute of Oceanography of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) working in the field of ecotoxicology with particular focus on the effects of pollution in marine organisms. Her research area of interest includes biomarkers of pollutant exposure and effects, and bioassays. She has studied physiological condition, bioenergetics, cellular detoxification mechanisms, oxidative stress parameters, genotoxicity and endocrine disruption in marine organisms in relation to pollution and environmental stress. She has applied biological effect methods to measure the health of marine organisms in a range of marine ecosystems, with different types and levels of contamination.
She has been actively involved in a number of EU and national projects related to environmental stress effects, pollution assessment and environmental monitoring in marine coastal waters. She is author of 14 peer-reviewed journal articles, one book chapter and over 20 publications in peer-reviewed conference proceedings.
Dr Catherine Tsangaris holds a doctoral degree in Ecotoxicology from the University of Athens, Greece, a master’s degree in Environmental Biology from the University of Manchester, UK, and a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Athens, Greece. During her doctoral degree she carried out research visits at the University of Plymouth and Plymouth Marine Laboratory, UK, through an Erasmus grant.
