SuSy Project: Surfacing System for Ship RecoverySea Trials Completed in Chalkis Shipyard in Greece.
The SuSy Project is a 7th Framework programme project funded by the EU through Directorate H (Transport) of the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation. The project is led by BMT in the UK and has 9 partners in the UK, Greece, Germany and France, including research institutes, universities and commercial organisations. The project is developing systems to help stabilize vessels and avoid spillages immediately after maritime vessel accidents. Full details of the project can be found on the main website at www.su-sy.eu
Why SuSy
The worldwide merchant marine fleet consists of approximately 79,000 vessels. In and around European waters in the last 5 years there have been an average of 700 major accidents including 44 sinkings per year. With every accident there is a possibility of loss of vessel, life and environmental damage. The ability to add buoyancy and stability to a casualty will vastly increase the probability of a good recovery with limited impact.
The SUSY project is developing a system to help to stabilize vessels and avoid spillages immediately after a vessel accident. Additionally the same technology is being developed to lift sunken vessels. The SuSy project is adapting well-known submarine rescue technology into systems to be used for commercial ships in emergency situations. This combines modified rocket booster technologies with compressed gas systems or the compressed gas system alone to provide rapid large volume gas generation in short periods of time. Combined with balloon technologies, this creates a multi purpose modular system for ship rescue purposes.more
