Dr. Chris Smith is a Director of Research in the Institute of Marine Biological Resources of the Hellenic Centre of Marine Research. He has been with the HCMR since it’s beginning in 2003 and previously before it’s merger at the Institute of Marine Biology of Crete.

He completed his doctoral research at the University of Glasgow in 1988 working on the impacts of burrowing fauna on benthic community structure, after earning a first class honours degree in Marine Biology from Heriot Watt University, Scotland in 1984

His post-doctoral studies brought him to the Institute of Marine Biology of Crete in the 1988, employed on an SfS NATO project investigating the benthic ecology in Heraklion Bay. This work developed into several branches and he has subsequently been responsible for many EU projects investigating ecosystem interactions and fisheries. Being involved in imaging techniques for seabed studies had also led to his involvement in the development and application of underwater instrumentation and supporting platforms.

Dr Smith’s involvement in EU projects in the last 10 years has included: CoralFISH, MEDISEH, MEECE, SuSy, ODEMM, HERMIONE, Prevent Escape, NECCESITY, AMASON, ELME, COST-IMPACT

He was involved in the first acquisition and scientific applications of remote underwater imaging technologies in Greece and has responsibility for running the HCMR Remotely Operated Vehicle system – 4 ROVs including the 2000 m Max Rover system, supporting a wide variety of science and service projects. These systems are part of the Greek State’s response to maritime disaster and the team has been involved in the search and recovery work on several helicopters, fighter planes and the cruise liner Sea Diamond.
