Dr. Sevastou completed her doctoral training in Management of Marine and Land-Living Resources, Department of Biology, University of Crete, Greece. Her thesis focused on the ecology of meiofauna of Mediterranean sandy beaches emphasizing on the distribution patterns of benthic copepods.
Dr. Sevastou was a post-doctoral fellow in the Marine Ecology Laboratory at University of Crete, working on the effects of aquaculture on the environment and vice-versa, and the development of operational tools (e.g. indicators, models) for describing aquaculture-environmental relationships. A model for estimating the production carrying capacity of any fishfarm in relation to the environmental characteristics of the site and the establishment of a monitoring system for Greek fishfarms was one of the main outcomes of her post-doctoral research. These tools have been adopted by Greek authorities in order to develop the appropriate legislation.
Dr. Sevastou was a short-term research fellow in the German Centre for Marine Biodiversity, Germany, where she enhanced her taxonomic skills through the taxonomic description of a new harpacticoid copepod species from the deep Mediterranean Sea.
Dr. Sevastou completed her graduate and postgraduate studies in Biology (Marine Biology/Ecology) at University of Crete, Greece.

Research Interests
Dr. Sevastou’s research interests relate to (meio)benthic diversity of marine ecosystems, focusing on population dynamics of copepod assemblages. Using advanced methods in data processing, she investigates meiobenthic diversity patterns in various marine ecosystems, from the shores to the deep sea. Recently, her research expanded to include the investigation of biological patterns (i) at hotspot ecosystems, such as seamounts and submarine canyons, (ii) at large spatial scales, and (iii) over long time scales. Other research interests that have evolved through her studies and collaborations with international research groups include the taxonomy of harpacticoid copepods, the response of benthos to anthropogenic disturbance, the assessment and monitoring of marine ecosystem quality, experimental ecology, aquaculture – environment interactions.
