Dr. Elena Sarropoulou (h-index 8, 159 citations) is an active young scientist (Research Assistant (Grade D’) of the Institute of Marine Biology and Genetics of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR).

Dr. Elena Sarropoulou completed her PhD at the Max-Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tuebingen, Germany. Her thesis work focused in the generation of fundamental genomic resources as well as their application in view of ontogenesis and stress response in the gilthead sea bream Sparus aurata, a species of high commercial value.

She has participated in several large, EU-funded projects mainly involved as an expert in genetics and functional genomics applied to studying growth, stress and disease resistance in marine aquaculture species. She also has a fine background in bioinformatics enabling her to analyses sequencing data, genotyping data, expression data as well as protein data.

Dr.Sarropoulou has more than 15 publications in high-impact international peer-reviewed scientific journals (e.g. PLOSONE, BMC Genomics, Molecular Immunology, Physiological Genomics, Molecular Phylogeny and Evolution). She has communicated more than 25 publications in national and international workshop and conference proceedings. Working in the field of functional genomics and metagenomics she is trained in the laboratories of Roche in Penzberg, Germany on next generation sequencing with the GS-FLX platform (454, Roche) and she is responsible for operating the instrument. She acts as a regular reviewer for in international peer-reviewed journals as well as of international research proposals, is member of the editorial board of the Journal of Marine Sciences:Research & Development and is part of the organizing committee of the “Genomics in Aquaculture Symposium” (GIA2009.com and GIA2011.com) as well as of the 2nd World Congress on Biotechnology, Philadelphia,USA.

Dr. Sarropoulou has obtained her PhD award in Mai 2004 from the Eberhards-Karls University Tuebingen, Germany. She holds a “Diploma” degree in Biology from the Ludwig-Maximilians Universitaet Munich, Germany as well as the “Erstes Staatsexamen” (equivalent to Master degree) in Biology and Chemistry from the Ludwig-Maximilians Universitaet Munich, Germany.
