1. Positioning of the Centre in the Greek and international research landscape
The Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) holds a prominent position in both the Greek
and international research landscapes. It is recognized for its extensive contributions to marine
research, technological development, and innovation. Its three institutes, the Institute of Marine
Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture (IMBBC); the Institute of Marine Biological Resources
and Inland Waters (IMBRIW); and the Institute of Oceanography (IO), cover a broad perspective
of both fundamental sciences, required for understanding the marine environments, monitoring
and prediction; and the development of applied biotechnological and aquaculture needed for the
development of the blue economy. As such (and, also, partly due to the historical consolidation
of several institutes), HCMR operates three research institutes and facilities across Greece,
including Attica, Crete, and Rhodes, and employs ~ 650 staff members, including 90 officially
appointed researchers.
