Ir. John Laurijsen was born in the Netherlands in 1953. In 1980 he obtained his master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Eindhoven. For 10 years he worked in the Dutch glass industry.
Ir. Laurijsen came to Crete in 1990 and quickly joined the Institute of Marine Biology of Crete. He specialized in the development and maintenance of databases for storage and analysis of scientific information. He developed databases for Discards, Experimental fishery, Biological sampling, Hydro acoustics, CTD measurements and Fishery laws.
He worked on the Greek National Program for the Collection of Fisheries Information concerning landings, effort and socioeconomic data. For FAO, the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, he developed the first Windows version of SIPAM, a database for aquaculture in the Mediterranean. He contributed the SAMAKI program to the European Union’s Lake Victoria Fisheries Research Project in Africa.
