Harilaos (Haris) Kontoyiannis is a physical oceanographer, senior researcher, at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, where he works since 1995. His main research focuses on the large-scale flows in the open and coastal ocean by using in-situ field observations.
He received a BS in Physics from the University of Athens in 1983. In 1984 he was admitted for graduate studies by the Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) at the University of Rhode Island, USA. At GSO, he worked with professor R. Watts and received an MS in 1988 and a PhD in 1992. His MS thesis was on the ‘The role of the pressure field in the dynamics and energetics of the Gulf Stream’, while his PhD thesis was on the ‘Gulf Stream path variability between 70o W and 74o W: Observations and quasigeostrophic modeling of mixed instabilities’

PUBLICATIONS
Harilaos Kontoyiannis, as of summer of 2011, has published/participated in thirty-three (33) peer-review scientific articles, two (2) of which are monographs in peer-review journals, and five (5) of which are articles in science books. He has another thirty-five (35) contributions to scientific conferences, excluding those contributions with contents that were also published in a scientific journal. There are about 300 citations to his published work. He has also written sixty-three (63) chapters, with analyses and results on physical oceanographic data (hydrography and currents) in multidisciplinary technical reports.
