Dr. Stelios Katsanevakis is a Researcher in the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (in the Institute of Marine Biological Resources). He assumed his duties in June 2007.
Dr. Katsanevakis completed a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens in 1995. In 2000 he obtained a Master of Science in Biological Oceanography at the University of Athens. After attaining a Hellenic State Scholarship, he completed his Ph.D. at the department of Oceanography at the University of Athens in 2004. The focus of his doctoral research was the population ecology of the common octopus, investigating spatiotemporal patterns of abundance and the population dynamics of the species. Dr. Katsanevakis was a post-doctoral fellow in the Biology Department of the University of Athens. The topic of his postdoctoral research was “Effect of marine pollution by human litter to the composition, abundance and biodiversity of benthic communities”.
Later his research focused on developing innovative methods and field techniques for monitoring marine populations and communities, trying to confront the problem of imperfect detectability. He mostly developed techniques for underwater visual surveys with SCUBA or snorkelling. Such methods were applied in studies of population dynamics, alien invasions, and biological monitoring of MPAs. Dr. Katsanevakis has also worked towards developing methods and tools for ecosystem-based marine spatial management (FP7 MESMA project).
Dr. Katsanevakis has coordinated/participated in several EU-funded or other international and national projects and is (co)author of >120 publications (49 in peer-reviewed international journals).
