Alexandra Gogou is a chemical oceanographer/ organic biogeochemist, holding since January 2008 an Associate Researcher position in the Institute of Oceanography, Hellenic Centre of Marine Research (HCMR), in Anavyssos, Greece.

She earned her Ph.D. thesis in the field of Organic Geochemistry from the Chemistry Department of the University of Crete in Heraklion, Greece in 1998 (advisor Prof. E. Stephanou). Her Ph.D. research focused on the biogeochemical cycling of natural and anthropogenic organic compounds in the northeastern Mediterranean Sea, including various compartments such aerosols, marine dissolved and particulate material, sinking matter and surficial sediments (EU Science Project).

In 1999, she had a post-Doctoral appointment with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (Dr. Repeta’s Lab, Marine Chemistry & Geochemistry Department), to work on the chemical characterization and cycling of dissolved and particulate organic matter in the ocean (NSF project in Ocean Sciences).

From 2000-2002, she was holding a postdoctoral E.U. fellow at ‘Laboratoire de Biogeochimie et Chimie Marines’ in University Paris VI (P.&M. Curie), working with Dr. I. Bouloubassi on assessing the biogeochemical cycling of marine and terrestrial organic matter in the western and eastern Mediterranean Sea (EU-MAST project).

In 2003, she went back to Greece with a Marie Curie Return Fellowship to work in HCMR, carrying out a paleoceanography and paleoclimatology project in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, in collaboration with Dr. V. Lykousis.

From 2005-2008, she was Assistant Professor in the Department of Marine Sciences, University of the Aegean, in Lesvos Island, Greece. Her teaching duties included the following undergraduate courses: ‘Chemical Oceanography’, ‘Marine Geochemistry’, ‘Marine Chemistry’ and ‘Biogeochemical Cycles & Climate Change’. At the graduate level, she was co-teaching the course ‘Biogeochemical Processes in the Coastal Environment’ in the M.Sc. programme ‘Coastal Resource Management’.

She has participated, as principal investigator and coordinator, in numerous research projects. She has published 23 articles in high quality journals and books (total citation number over 400).

A central element of her career is educating and motivating students, with one aim being to nurture and develop strong candidates for research in marine biogeochemistry and climate change research.
