Dr. Marianna Giannoulaki has been working as a research scientist at HCMR since 1998 during which she has acquired a broad range of experience as a fisheries biologist and more recently as an Associate Researcher of the Institute of Marine Biological Resources at HCMR. She assumed her duties in October 2006.
Marianna earned her doctoral and master’s degrees in Marine Biology from the Biology Department, University of Crete, Greece. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. She has completed her doctoral training in the Fisheries Biology group at the Biology Department of the University of Crete. Her thesis work focused on the ecology and the spatial distribution of small pelagic fish in the Greek Seas based on acoustic survey data introducing the application of novel spatial analysis statistical techniques.
Marianna’s scientific background and research interests are multidisciplinary focusing on population dynamics of small pelagic fish, physical/biological interactions in marine ecosystems, fisheries acoustics, spatial analysis techniques, determination of essential fish habitat and habitat suitability modelling, food web modelling as well as stock assessment modelling techniques. She is an active member of the acoustic surveys and the acoustic data analysis for the estimation of pelagic fish stocks biomass off the Greek coast and currently the scientific coordinator of the “AcousMed” project that concerns the harmonization of historical acoustic surveys in the Mediterranean Sea. She has a high level of expertise on spatial analysis techniques, predominantly geostatistics and generalised additive models. She has done pioneer work within the Mediterranean region in respect to the application of habitat suitability models for small pelagic fish species. She is an active member of the stock assessment study groups in the Mediterranean region (i.e., GFCM, STECF, FAO-EastMed) being responsible for the application of stock assessment models for anchovy and sardine stocks in the Greek Seas providing essential information for management advice and the production of fishery management plans.
Marianna has been or currently is involved in the implementation or the coordination of 19 national and international research programmes which have led to collaborative work with scientists in most Mediterranean countries. During this time she has published 20 peer reviewed papers and written over 50 non-peer reviewed papers, working documents and contract reports. She regularly reviews papers for a range of journals.

Research Interests
