Dr Giannoudi is a chemical oceanographer with specialization on biotechnology has been working in the area of biosensors involving analytical techniques as well as having an interest in organic and inorganic chemistry. She obtained her PhD in 2005 from University of Cranfield in the area of biosensor technology involving the novel development of a photosystem-II electrochemical based sensor for the detection of pollutants and on the potential application of the sensor to monitoring real water samples (EU-FP5 project-Acronym:BEEP). The developed flow chamber used for incorporating screen-printed electrodes and immobilised biological material has recently been available for purchase. The resulted sensor incorporating the biological material derived from higher plants such as Spinacea oleracea L. or photosynthetic bacteria such as rhodobacter spheroids enabled the applicant to demonstrate the effectiveness and ability of screen-printed electrochemical sensors to be used as conducting parts for in-situ analysis of pollutants. As part of this project, she represented her department in all EU meetings with the international team of collaborators making decisions on proposed methods and strategies to achieve the common goals outlined in the proposal.
In recognition of this work Dr Giannoudi was given a position at Cranfield University (2005) in the Institute of Bioscience and Technology (IBST), an internationally recognised centre of excellence in the field of biosensors with a strong commercial focus. In collaboration with Professor Sergey Piletsky she continued her work on electrochemical applications of screen-printed electrodes. As a result the applicant had worked on a project which recent won the Most Innovative Collaboration in The Business/University Collaboration Awards supported by EEDA with the Pharmaceutical Company Sphere Medical Ltd, Cambridge. The collaboration focused on utilising an exciting new technology, “Molecularly Imprinted Polymers” or MIPs, to develop materials that specifically bind to certain drugs. These materials can be used in conjunction with Sphere’s microchip enabling the measurement of such drugs on line, which is not currently practical by other methods.
The past 4 years Dr Giannoudi has been working as a recalled researcher in the framework of the program “ENTER-2004”, which constitutes an action of the Operational Program for Competitiveness (EPAn) and is part-financed by the General Secretariat of Research and Technology in Greece (25%) and the European Social Fund (75%). The project involves the development of an amperometric immunosensor (biosensor) for the detection of toxins resulting during Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). In 2008, her poster presentation was awarded in the area of “green biotechnology” at the conference organised by Bionova Ltd. at Zappeion Megaro, Athens. Having worked to several EU and National projects she has gained the experience of laboratory and administrative work as well as efficiently managing all project deliverables.
Dr Giannoudi is also involved on ocean acidification project, detection of pCO2 and alkalinity measurements in seawater samples.
Finally she has been a member of various committees for conferences and workshops, and has the experience to work well under pressure.
