Dr Evangelia Chatzinikolaou is a post-doc researcher in the Institute of Marine Biology and Genetics at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research.

She is currently involved in several ongoing EU funded research projects: 1) ViBRANT (Virtual Biodiversity Research and Access Network for Taxonomy) is an FP7 project supporting the development of virtual research communities involved in biodiversity science. 2) VECTORS (Vectors of Change in Oceans and Seas Marine Life, Impact on Economic Sectors) is an FP7 project seeking to develop integrated and multidisciplinary research regarding the changes enforced by human activities in the marine environment, their mechanisms and their environmental and socio-economic impacts. 3) MAPMED (Management of Port Areas in the Mediterranean Basin) is an ENPI project that addresses the issue of marine pollution in touristic port areas and aims to ensure both tourism development and protection of natural heritage.

Dr Chatzinikolaou has been a member of the management team of the project HELBIONET (Hellenic Network for Biodiversity Research) which was funded by the Greek General Secretariat of Research and Technology in order to design the construction and implementation of the national Greek node for the European Infrastructure of LIFEWATCH (ESFRI, FP7). She has been also involved in the implementation of the project PESI aiming at the formation of “A Pan-European Species-directories Infrastructure” (FP7). Dr Chatzinikolaou has participated in the “Production of Electronic Educational Material for Environmental Education” that was conducted by the Education Research Centre of Greece.

Dr Chatzinikolaou completed her Ph.D. studies in the School of Ocean Sciences of the University of Wales, Bangor in the United Kingdom, supervised by Professor Chris Richardson. The subject of her Ph.D. Thesis was “The ecology and growth of the netted dogwhelk Nassarius reticulatus (Gastropoda: Nassariidae)”. Her work focused on the geographical distribution of Nassarius reticulatus in the intertidal zone, the dynamics of different populations, the age determination with the use of statoliths, the reproduction of adults, the development and growth of larvae, the factors affecting adult growth, as well as the impact of marine pollution on the reproductive system (imposex).

Dr Chatzinikolaou holds a M.Sc. degree from the School of Ocean Sciences of the University of Wales, Bangor (UK) in “Marine Environmental Protection” and a B.Sc. degree in Biology from the National and Kapodestrian University of Athens, Greece. During her M.Sc. thesis she studied the lethal and sublethal effects of insecticides on marine invertebrates. The subject of her B.Sc. thesis was the investigation of the toxic impact of cryoprotectants on the microalgae Isochrysis galbana and Dunaliella tertiolecta and the effect of different cryopreservation conditions on the lipid content of microalgae.
