Mrs Georgia Assimakopoulou is a Biological Oceanographer and works as Research Assistant at the Institute of Oceanography of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR).
She has been involved in many studies of coastal and open sea areas and she has participated in many national and international projects, Southern European Seas: Assessing and Modelling Ecosystem changes (SESAME)/EC, FACTS, Fluxes in the Aegean of Carbon and Thorium Study (Collaboration HCMR with Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island), Transfer and Fate of Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) toxins in European Marine Waters (FATE)/EC, Monitoring projects on greek gulfs (Messiniakos, Thermaikos, Saronikos Gulf), Key coastal processes in the mesotrophic Skagerrak and the oligotrophic Northern Aegean: a comparative study» (ΚΕΥCOP)/ (EU-MAST-III), Impact of natural and trawling events on re-suspension, dispersion and fate of pollutants» (INTERPOL).
She has trained at Flow Cytometry methods in Research and Technology Centre (FTZ), Working Group Applied Physics/ Marine Technology (APM), University of Kiel, Germany. She has participated in thr Course “The Role of Flow Cytometry in Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning” sponsored by MARBEF, an EU Framework VI Network of Excellence at Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn Naples, Italy.
She is author and co-author in 11 peer-reviewed scientific journals, 45 scientific papers presented at International and National Conferences with proceedings and in more than 35 technical reports.
She will defend her doctoral Thesis in University of Kiel on October 2011 with theme “Plankton distribution in Eastern Mediterranean Sea”.

Ecology and Physiology of Marine Phytoplankton: Spatial, seasonal and inter-annual variability of phytoplankton parameters. Phytoplankton structure and functioning in coastal and open sea areas. Influence of environmental factors on phytoplankton structure and growth rates. Phytoplankton relationships with abiotic and biotic parameters in the pelagic food web (field and lab experiments). Study of autotrophic picoplankton.
Primary Production – Biological Processes – Carbon Flow: In the frame of phytoplankton ecology and environmental factors influencing photosynthesis. Bioassays or enrichment experiments in field (natural populations in situ studies) and lab (phytoplankton cultures) in relation to phytoplankton physiology and rates.
