Dr. Panagiotis Michalopoulos is a geochemist-oceanographer. He hold a researcher position at the Institute of Oceanography since 2008.

He graduated with a B.Sc. from the Geology Department, University of Athens and completed the M.Sc program in Sedimentalogy and its Applications at the Postgraduate Research Institute for Sedimentology, Reading University, U.K. After completing his military service, he was awarded a four year fellowship by the Hellenic Fellowship Foundation to conduct doctoral studies abroad . He completed his Ph.D. in coastal oceanography at the Marine Sciences Research Center, Stony Brook University (advisor: Dr. Robert C. Aller, Distinguished Professor). He conducted his field work in the Amazon Delta , studying the formation of diagenetic carbonate and aluminosiliicate minerals in deltaic sediments, their role in global elemental cycles with special emphasis on “reverse weathering reactions”. Since his return to Greece he has worked at the Hellenic Center for Marine Research where his research focuses on various aspects of early diagenetic reactions and sediment-water interactions in natural depositional marine environments as well as contaminated sites. He has studied “reverse weathering reactions” and silica biogeochemistry (i.e. interactions of clastic sediments with biogenic silica and dissolved seawater constituents) in deltaic systems such as Mississippi and Danube deltas and he is currently exploring the potential relationship of diagenetic aluminosilicate formation with organic carbon preservation in marine sediments. He has participated in international and national programs as principal investigator or co-investigator
